GENERAL SYLLABUS OUTLINE

Course Name: Integrated Library Study Skills
Grade: 6-8
1.) Course Description:
Library Science at this level is an integrated course designed to develop a student centered program
that focuses on research and recreational reading.  The units of study are cooperatively planned by
the librarian, the subject teacher and their written syllabi.

Students shall the opportunity to:
v     Be familiar with library behavior, personnel, and physical arrangement of the library.
v     Be familiar with the Dewey decimal classification for non-fiction.
v     Be familiar with the on-line card catalog.
v     Be familiar with internet ethics and on-line search methods.
v     Be familiar with use of information legally and ethically.
v     Demonstrate use of the following library resources including but no limited to:
         using databases or on-line search tools including:  EBSCO, Encyclopedia Americana, SIRS,
         Discover, Associated Press Photo Archive and the ACCESS Pennsylvania Database.
v     Interlibrary Loan in cooperation with the librarian.
v     Ability to read computer screen for information.
v     Ability to use various search engines.
v     Cite sources according to MLA bibliographic form.
v     Encourage independent reading for recreation with the Accelerated Reader Program.
