    Why Music?  Imagine your car without a radio, aerobics without sound, Monday Night Football without its' distinctive theme song, weddings without music to dance to, or movies without sound tracks.

      Why music?  With the emphasis on English, math and science because of state testing, where does music fit in and how does it benefit our students?  Well, music has been shown through numerous studies to not only be beneficial to a student's well-being, but to help in all academic areas as well.   

      For example:

    •1.   Students in top quality music programs scored 22 percent higher in English and 20 percent higher in math on standardized tests mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act (University of Kansas).

    •2.   In 2006, SAT takers with coursework in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 43 points higher on the math portion (The College Board, Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report for 2006).

      Why do I teach music, and why should it be an integral part of the school curriculum?  An excerpt from a recent MENC publication illustrates the benefit of music education in reference to other subjects as well:

    Music is a Science

    It is exact, specific;  and it demands exact acoustics.  A conductor’s full score is a chart, a graph that indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.


    Music is Mathematical

    It is based on the subdivisions of time into fractions that must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.


    Music is a Foreign Language

    Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French; and the notation is certainly not English – but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas.  The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.


    Music is History

    Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, often even the country and/or racial feeling.


    Music is Physical Education

    It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lips, cheeks, and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach, and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.


    Music is all these things, but most of all, Music is Art

    It allows a human being to take all these dry, technically boring (but difficult) techniques and use them to create emotion.  That is one thing that science cannot duplicate:  humanism, feeling emotion, call it what you will!!
