• The Belle Vernon Area School District recognizes the increased expectations for our students in regards to mathematical competency.  As we transition our instruction and courses to align to the Common Core State Standards, we realize that there are certain mathematical skills and practices that student must master in order to be “college and career ready.”  To address these concerns, we have analyzed our course offerings and mathematics curriculum in order to better prepare our studentsand community for success in an increasingly globalized society.  We believe Algebraic skills are paramount for any student to succeed once he orshe takes the next step in life, regardless of what that next step is for each individual.  Our new Secondary Mathematics Curriculum and Flow chart addresses our belief that it is not a matter of “if” a student will reach proficiency in Algebra 1, it’s a matter of “when” a student will achieve proficiency in Algebra 1.

We understand that students attain mathematical concepts at vastly different rates, so we developed a set of protocols to help place our students into Algebra 1 courses at the most appropriate time of their mathematical development.  Not every student is capable of the abstract and critical thinking skills required of an Algebra 1 course at the same grade level.  Our protocol will help our teachers, administrators, and guidance staff direct students and parents/guardians in the right direction when planning for future coursework and skillsets.  The accompanying document outlines the possibilities of our Secondary Mathematics Curriculum, in addition to the protocol we have set in place to determine the best placement of our students into Algebra 1 courses.
