People attending BVA Derby Day 2020 to be held May 2nd at Amulet Farms in conjunction with the 146th running of the world-famous Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky., will find things both familiar and new.
Directors of the BVA Charitable Fund announced that the event will be held for a third year at the Rostraver harness racing facility, “Thanks to the continued generosity of Tom Svrcek,” a spokesman said.
Svrcek, owner of Amulet Farms and CSC Insurance Options, will chair the event. Tom Simon, owner of Howard Hanna Simon Real Estate Services, who manages the popular Derby Day fashion and hat contest, will be co-chair.
During the first two years, the event generated more than $90,000 for the BVA Charitable Fund, a non-profit, volunteer group dedicated to raising money to enhance educational opportunities in the Belle Vernon Area School District.
While a race-day atmosphere, food trucks and colorful attire remain the focus of BVA Derby Day, it will be highlighted with music and song by a widely-known band, to be announced later, along with other new features.
The event will be held rain or shine, although weather held up again last year, when more than 500 turned out for what has evolved in a premier social gathering in the Mon Valley.
“People appreciate the opportunity to experience something this unique,” Svrcek said. “Meanwhile, the proceeds go to a good cause, investing in the future of our young people.”
To date, the three-year-old organization has provided nearly $34,000 for school projects, increasing grants from $2,500 in the inaugural year as resources have grown.
Concurrently, the BVA Charitable Fund has been investing money in a perpetuity account managed by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, with which it is affiliated, in order to provide a stream of revenue for future gift-giving.
Fund directors are Svrcek, Simon, Dr. Michele Dowell, Jack Lofink, Lizzette Sterner, Gina C. Lynn, Mike Stangroom, Toni-Jo Kunka and Joe Grata, all volunteers.
Growth of the organization is dependent upon contributions, United Way designations, memorials, donations and gifts. Brochures and information are available at the school’s Administration Building or by calling 724-808-2500, Ext. 1102.
